1,185,655. Making aircraft wing structures; making ribbed panels for buildings cars or ships; rolling; extruding. BRINGEWALD PROCESS CORP. 28 March, 1967, No. 14170/67. Headings B3A, B3M and B3P. [Also in Divisions B7 and F3] A part 44 with integral stiffeners is formed by pressing into the surface of a workpiece, a segmental die assembly 43 having a plurality of punches 48 which cause backward extrusion of material between the punches. A plane workpiece 44, Fig. 1 (not shown), together with a plurality of separate die segments 45 are secured in a container 42 and clamped by a bolt 69. Each segment 45 has a plurality of aligned punches 48, Fig. 6 (not shown). A bed 41 is then reciprocated whereby the segments are pressed inwardly by roll 40. Hold-down rolls 83 prevent buckling of the workpiece as it is extruded into the spaces 49 between the punches 48 to form ribs which completely fill the spaces. Therafter the segments are withdrawn individually by bolts (55), Fig. 4 (not shown). In a modification Figs. 8, 9 (not shown), ribs are formed on both surfaces of the workpiece by pressing opposed die assemblies (101), (102) between lower and upper rolls (103), 104. The work piece may be of aluminium and worked at room temperature. Alternatively it may be of aluminium alloy, steel or titanium and heated in a furnace, by electrical resistance orinductionheating or by a heated platen disposed under the workpiece. The ribbed panel may be used for aircraft wings or frames, guided missile bodies, space vehicle frames, car bodies, ship hulls and architectural structures.
