Abstract

1,185,330. Flame retardant hardboard. BOWATERS UNITED KINGDOM PAPER CO. Ltd. 26 July, 1968 [26 July, 1967], No. 34299/ 67. Headings D2A and D2B. Flame retardant hardboard is manufactured by forming in a continuous manner, a travelling layer of wet wood fibre, forming on the surface thereof a layer comprising wet asbestos fibre or mica and wood pulp and causing the two layers to combine by removing water therefrom. The asbestos or mica and wood layer may be treated with one or more flame retardant chemicals for example by spraying with an aqueous solution of a flame detardant chemical some of which penetrates through to the wood-fibre layer. The asbestos or mica and wood layers may also contain starch as a binder. In the example a mixture of wood fibre, asbestos fibre, starch and water is supplied to a secondary headbox; from which it is disposed in the form of a layer upon a wet mat of wood pulp formed in the mat forming machine and, following passage through pressure rollers, the upper surface of the lap is sprayed with a flame retardant chemical a solution of which contains urea and formalin some of which passes through the asbestos or mica wood layer to the wood fibre layer.
