Abstract

Esters are prepared by transesterification in the presence of a catalyst comprising a reaction product of a dialkyl tin oxide (R 2 SnO) and a compound (MX # ) or M(R<SP>1</SP>) m X #-m in which R represents an alkyl group, X a halogen atom or OR<SP>2</SP> radical where R<SP>2</SP> is hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical, R<SP>1</SP> a hydrocarbon radical, M an atom of aluminium, silicon, boron, titanium or zirconium or a vanadyl radical, v is a valency of M and n is an integer between 1 and v-1 inclusive. Examples describe the preparation of ethylene dimethacrylate, dibutyl adipate, sebacate and phthalate, amyl methacrylate, and 2-ethoxy ethyl acrylate. Many catalysts are specified and the examples use compounds prepared by reacting dibutyl tin oxide and titanium tetraisopropoxide, tetra-n-butyl titanate, tetrakis (2-ethyl hexyl) titanate and tetra-npropyl titanate.
