Abstract

1,183,783. Expanded cellular ebonite mouldings. VOLCREPE Ltd. 11 Feb., 1969 [6 March, 1968], No. 10783/68. Addition to 1,115,573. Heading B5A. Mouldings of expanded cellular ebonite are made by incorporating into a rubber composition a blowing agent which reacts above the vulcanizing temperature vulcanizing the composition in a mould at a temperature such that the blowing agent does not react, removing the moulded component from the mould and expanding the moulded component by heating uniformity over its surface area. The expanded moulding is then heated further to convert the rubber to ebonite. The blowing step is preferably performed in a heated bed of fluidized particles. Preferably the rubber composition, which may be natural or synthetic is moulded at 140‹ C., heated to expand for 3-5 minutes at 180-200‹ C. and heated for 2-3 hours at 150‹ C. to complete the conversion to ebonite. The vulcanized rubber moulding may be stored before or after foaming for subsequent conversion to ebonite.
