Abstract

118,353. Marks, E. C. R., (Swan Process Oil Co.). Sept. 25, 1917. Mineral oils, purifying; recovering waste lubricants.-Relates to a process for refining oils, applicable for example for reclaiming waste lubricating oils, and comprises the treatment of the oil with kieselguhr or like diatomaceous earth and subsequent filtration; the oil so purified may be distilled to remove volatile impurities and thereafter again treated with the kieselguhr &c. and filtered. In the plant shown, impure oil from a tank A is pumped to a heated tank B wherein it may be treated with reagents and allowed to settle, and passes thence to a tank C wherein it is washed with water. The tank C is provide with baffles 37, 39, Fig. 2, an oil outlet 42, and a water over. flow 41 at a lower level. The oil is next agitated in a tank D with kieselguhr which may be supplied as a mixture with clear oil from a tank E. From the tank D the mixture passes to a filter F from which the clear oil passes to a tank G; or oil may be withdrawn directly from the tanks B or C to the tank G. The oil is pumped from the tank G to a tank H supplying a still K. The residual oil from the still passes to a tank N and may be retreated with kieselguhr in a tank D' and passed through a filter F<1>. The order of the tanks C, D may be reversed.
