[Also in Division C7] 1 - Allyl - 2:2 dimethyl - 3:4- pentadien - 1 - ol is prepared by adding dropwise with cooling an ether solution of allylmagnesium bromide to an ether solution of 2:2-dimethyl-3:4-pentadien- 1 - ol. 1 - (p - Dimethylaminophenyl) - 2:2 - dimethyl- 3:4-pentadien-1-ol is similarly prepared by adding p-dimethylaminophenyl lithium to 2:2-dimethyl-3:4-pentadien-1-ol. 1 - Formyl- 1 - allenylcyclohexene - 3 is prepared by heating under reflux a mixture of propargyl alcohol, 1 -formylcyclohexene-3, hydroquinone, and p-toluene sulphonic acid in benzene. 1- Hydroxymethyl - 1 - allenylcyclohexene - 3 is prepared from the above allenylcyclohexene compound by slowly adding to a solution in alcohol of the compound and aqueous formaldehyde solution a solution of sodium hydroxide at 35‹ to 50‹ C., heating at 60‹ C. for 3 hours and pouring the resulting mixture into water, followed by extraction with benzene and, after drying, distilling. 3:6 - Dioxa - 8:9 - decadien - 1 - ol (diethylene glycol mono-ether of 2 :3-butadien-l-ol) is prepared by dissolving KOH in isopropanol, cooling the solution and adding 2 :3-butadien- 1 -ol, and then passing through the solution ethylene oxide.
