Abstract

1,183,172. Ink ribbon mechanisms. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 8 Jan., 1968 [13 Jan., 1967], No. 35707/69. Divided out of 1,183,171. Heading B6F. An ink ribbon cartridge 10 comprises a housing containing a supply spool 16 of ribbon 21 and a take-up spool 24 to receive the ribbon, both spools being rotatably mounted in the housing, the housing including an arcuate slot 42 which provides access for a drive roller (40), Fig. 1, not shown, to engage the periphery of the take-up spool 24 so that ribbon can be wound thereon, the arcuate slot extending along an arc intersecting the axis of rotation of the take-up spool. The construction of the drive roller mechanism is described and claimed in Specification 1,183,173. The cartridge 10 includes a recess 89 which is left empty when the cartridge contains a fabric ribbon, but contains a spring-urged disc 91 when the cartridge contains a plastics ribbon. The disc 91 is adapted to co-operate with a gear member (80, Fig. 1), to reduce the rate of feed of ribbon in a manner described and claimed in the Parent specification. A shield 48 at an end of the arcuate slot 42 prevents pointed projections on the drive roller (40) from engaging the ribbon on the supply spool 16.
