Abstract

118,315. Patterson, D. W. Aug. 20, 1917. Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves. - Relates to a fire-extinguishing system in which the extinguishing liquid is separated from its point of application by a fluid such as air under pressure, the fluid being released under fire conditions and the extinguishing liquid being concurrently put under pressure by a pump or otherwise. In the form of apparatus shown in Fig. 2 the pipes 23, 25 are each provided with a valve 28 attached by a stem, provided with a valve controlled vent, to the diaphragm 28b, in a chamber connected by the pipe 30 to a thermal head. When the head is closed the pipes are main tained under pressure from the air pumps, which are automatically controlled by the governor shown in detail in Fig. 9. The governor comprises a valve 60 in the supply pipe of the prime mover of the air compressor, provided with a spring-actuated stem bearing against a piston 62 in a cylinder communicating with the pipe line through tubes. On a slight fall in the pressure in the pipe line the valve 60 opens to start the compressor. On a fall of pressure in the pipe 30, the valve 28 opens and the increased pressure drop causes the actuation of a valve similar to the governor 35 to start the liqud pumps delivering liquid to the pipe system. The branch pipes may each be separated from the mains by means of a valve 42 connected to a diaphragm 43 in the chambers 43<a>, which is conrected by a by-pass 44 to the branch pipe on opposite sides of the valve 42. The by-pass is provided with floating ball valves 45, 46, the valve 45 having seats at the upper and lower end of its chamber, while the valve 46 has a seat at the upper end only. By this means the valves do not prevent the apparatus being charged with compressed air. On the fall of pressure owing to the opening of the thermal control, the valve 42 is raised by means of a diaphragm 43, and when liquid enters the pipe 23 it raises the ball valves 45, 46 against their seatings 48<a>, thus preventing pressure acting on the diaphragm 43 and so closing the valve 42.
