Abstract
118,291. Moore, W. T. Sept. 12, 1917. Materials, fibrous; pulp, preparation of.-In treating withered or decayed bracken fern (Pteris aquilina) for the manufacture of pulp for paper, boards, and the like, the pinnµ and pinnules are detached from the stems and the two parts treated separately. The pinnµ and pinnules are cleansed with water and then boiled with water without pressure for three or four hours, and the boiled material reduced to halfstuff in a breaker, beaten and bleached preferably simultaneously, in a beater, washed, passed through squeezing-rollers, and dried, either on screens or by heating. The stems, cut up if necessary, are boiled for three or four hours with a 5-10 per cent solution of soda or similar agent, either at atmospheric pressure or at a pressure of 20 lb. per sq. in. or thereabouts, then washed, transferred to the breaker, and treated as stated above. The pulp from the pinnµ and pinnules may be utilized with that from the stems, or separately, and the pulps may be combined at any stage after the breaking operation. The pulps obtained may be blended with other pulps.
