Abstract

1,182,729. Disc brakes; slack adjusters. LAMBERT BRAKE CORP. 23 April, 1968. No. 19175/68. Heading F2E. In a friction brake which is actuated by pulling a pull-rod 58 relative to the brake housing by movement of a lever 64 pivotally mounted to the housing, wear of the friction surfaces of the brake is automatically compensated by a cam-operated plunger which cooperates with a pawl and ratchet mechanism to advance a nut 74 along a screw-threaded portion 72 of the pull rod to shorten its effective length. When the lever 64 is moved by an hydraulic cylinder 80 to apply the brake, the plunger, which is mounted on the lever, is moved under the action of a spring 108 and causes the pawl to move over the teeth of the ratchet. On release of the brake, the cam surface 116 displaces the plunger against the action of the spring 108 to positively actuate the pawl in a direction tending to rotate the ratchet, the ratchet being moved on by one tooth interval when the lever 64 is displaced sufficiently on application of the brake. In Fig. 5, the pawl 94 is mounted directly on one end of the plunger, the other end of which co-operates with a tapered cam member 114 pivotally mounted on the brake housing. In order to accommodate lateral displacement of the plunger by the ratchet teeth, the member 98 is pivotally mounted on the lever 64, a spring 124 biasing the plunger and pawl into contact with the ratchet. In Fig. 6, the pawl 138 is mounted on a lever 136 pivotally connected to one end of the plunger, the other end of which carries a wheel 112a co-operating with a fixed cam surface 116a integral with the brake housing. Disc brakes. When the rod 58 is pulled on application of the brake, links 52, 54 draw pivots 48, 50 towards each other thereby causing counter rotation of two discs (24) (26) which are mounted back to back and concentric with the shaft 12 to be braked. The mutually facing surfaces of the discs (24) (26) have cam surfaces 32, 34 formed therein which co-operate with captive balls 36 to urge the discs apart when they are rotated thereby forcing friction surfaces (16), (18) into contact with both sides of two brake discs (20), (22). The brake discs (20), (22) have splined internal margins co-operating with complementary splined portions of the shaft 12 to allow axial displacement of the brake discs. Springs 38 cause retraction of the discs (24), (26) when the brake is released.
