Abstract

A probe unit for remotely measuring the circumference of a tube 10 comprises a first part that can be clamped against the inner wall of the tube and approximately centred on the tube axis and containing a step-by-step motor 5 and a second part 2, not in contact with the tube wall, driven by the step-by-step motor 5 so as to rotate about the axis of the first part, said second part having a measuring rod 6 brought into contact with the inner wall of the tube by a further motor such that every revolution of the further motor corresponds to a displacement of the measuring rod that is recorded at a control point for each angular position of the second part from which the circumference of the tube at this particular level can be determined. Switch means 17 are provided to reverse the motor when the measuring rod contacts the tube wall.
