Sub-angular or rounded slag is made by pressing slag, at a temperature at which its viscosity is such that it can be shaped by a pressing operation, in pockets of diameter # to 1¢ inches. Slag at 1300-1400‹ C. is fed between cooled rolls to solidify it to a depth sufficient to make it self-supporting when leaving the rolls. Silica, e.g. sand, can be added to the molten slag to give a silica content of 40-50%.
