Abstract

1,182,039. Nuclear fuel. SOC. BELGE POUR L'INDUSTRIE NUCLEAIRE BELGONUCLEAIRE S.A. 21 Aug., 1968 [23 Aug., 1967], No. 39991/68. Heading G6C. A fuel kernel 1, e.g. of uranium oxide, having a diameter of 800 microns is coated in a fluidized bed with successive layers 2 . . . 6. Layer 2 is 30 microns thick and is of low density spongy pyrolytic carbon deposited from acetylene at 1200‹ C. Layer 3 is 36 microns thick and is of high-density pyrolytic carbon deposited from methane at 1800‹ C. Layer 4 is 31 microns thick and is of silicon carbide deposited from trichloromethylsilane at 1400‹ C. Layer 5 is 60 microns thick and is of high-density pyrolytic carbon deposited from methane at 2000‹ C. Layer 6 is betwee 6 and 100 microns thick and is of low-density porous pyrolytic carbon deposited from acetylene at 1200‹ C. The particles thus formed are made into a fuel element by filling a container subjected to vibration. The spaces between the particles may be filled by a carbonized binder 7. The layer 6 serves to protect the underlying dense impermeable layers against fracture during manufacture or use of the fuel element.
