Abstract
1,181,838. Automatic position control. PROCESS EQUIPMENT CO. OF TIPP CITY. March 15, 1967 [March 17, 1966; April 6, 1966], No.12109/67. Heading G3R. The vertical position of a tool carried by a vehicle is maintained constant, relative to a laser beam swept about the vehicle at a selected height, by automatically controlling the vertical position of the tool in dependence on the output of a laser beam detector which moves vertically in synchronism with the tool. In Fig.1, a steerable motor-driven earth levelling vehicle C has a blade C7 which is carried by a circular subframe C8 supported by adjustable arms C11 and has conventional manual hydraulic controls C6 for blade height, pitch, tilt and horizontal angular position. To detect changes in the vertical position of one end of blade C7, a mast 10 pivoted at an appropriate point 11 on frame C8 carries at its upper end three photo-cell-filter combinations 23f so that when a narrow laser beam, which is swept at a fixed height over the working area, strikes only the centre photo-cell, the blade is in its desired vertical position and this is indicated by a lamp L in the vehicle cab. If, however, the height of the blade rises or falls as the vehicle moves over uneven ground, one of the two other photo-cells is illuminated to cause solenoid operation of a valve (not shown) controlling the appropriate adjustable hydraulic link 50 so that the blade is restored to the desired position. The desired position is selected by manual or tape-controlled operation of a hand wheel 20b adjusting the length of mast 10 through rack gearing 16. A further hand wheel 22b permits rotation of the mast so that the photo-cells may be pointed away from the direction of the laser source during initial setting. A damped pendulum within a container 15 attached to mast 10 maintains the latter vertical by automatic hydraulic control of jacks 13a, 13b which adjust the attitude of mast 10 about pivot 11 in two mutually perpendicular planes. When the hydraulic supply is not available, pendulum 15 is automatically locked to prevent the mast from falling.
