Abstract

1,181,731. Press knives. STAFFORD TOOL & DIE CO. Ltd. 15 Dec., 1967 [4 Jan., 1967; 18 April, 1967], Nos. 459/67 and 17694/67. Heading B4B. A press knife for cutting parts of garments from sheets 37, Fig. 3, of knitted or other textile fabric prior to sewing into garments comprises forme cutting blades 20, 21 secured to a base 19, the spaces between and around the blades being filled by pieces 22, 23 and 24 of resilient material having a smooth upper surface which is level with or above the cutting edges of the blades. In operation, the knife and the stretched sheets are placed in a press which is operated to urge the stretched sheets downwardly on to the blades thereby compressing the resilient material to provide the garment parts. The sheets 37 are impaled in a stretched condition prior to cutting by a number of prickers 36, Fig. 5, each comprising a barrel 30 secured to the base 19, the barrel having a stem 29, Fig. 4, axially movable relative thereto and biased outwardly therefrom, by a spring 35, and a needle 28 axially movable relative to the stem 29 and biased outwardly therefrom, by a spring 32. In a modification, the prickers are in the form of pins 61, Fig. 8, supported in a holder 62 which is secured to the base 19, the press knife further comprising spring-mounted supports 64 and an upper member 72 having bushes 74 which guide the member 72 on the supports 64 and having holes 78 for receiving the pins 61 as the member 72 is moved towards the base 19. The member 72 has a rubber layer 75. The member 72 is placed over the base 19 after the sheets have been stretched and impaled over the pins 61. In another modification, the prickers are in the form of loose headed pins, the base having a member provided with holes for receiving the sharpened ends of the pins which pass through the sheets of material. The heads of the pins are received in an upper member guided for movement relative to the base.
