Abstract
1,181,359. Road surface cutting machines. SUPER-CUT, Inc. 22 Aug., 1968, No. 40279/ 68. Heading E1G. A machine for removing bumps from and/ or providing anti-skid grooves in concrete paving comprises a long vehicle frame 28 supported by front and rear wheel assemblies 24, 26 and carrying central front and rear rotary cutter drums 32, 34 which respectively cut different patterns in the paving. Each drum may comprise a series of spaced diamond-faced discs, the discs of the rear drum being more closely spaced than those of the front drum. Alternatively the rear cutter may comprise a diamond-faced finishing drum. The cutters 32, 34 are mounted in a support 140 suspended from an auxiliary frame 30 by transverse pivots 142 and four adjusting screws 144, and are driven in the same or opposite directions (by adjustably-tensioned belts. The auxiliary frame 30 carries the vehicle engine 42 and can be raised and lowered about a rear pivot 38 - e.g. by a double-acting hydraulic cylinder 40 - within the limits of guide frames 104 and adjusting screws 106. The front wheel assembly 24 comprises a three-wheeled truck 44 floating on a horizontal pivot 46 and having a single caster wheel 56 and a pair of front wheels 52 which are geared to a hydraulic motor 66 and movable about a vertical pivot 50 by a steering cylinder 60. The rear wheel assembly 26 comprises two transversely-spaced pairs of chain-driven tandem wheels 80, 82 mounted in respective frames 74 pivotally suspended on a common drive shaft 76 carried by a support 78. The shaft 76, Fig. 7 (not shown), is chain driven by separate forward and reverse hydraulic motors (88), (90). The main frame 28 is adjusted relatively to the support 78 by screws 120. The lateral inclination of the cutters is thus adjusted by the screws 106, 120 which are associated with plunger-actuated indicator dials, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown) or scales, Fig. 10 (not shown), while the relative depths of cut are adjusted by the screws 144.
