Abstract

1,181,334. Coating. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 28 Aug., 1968 [30 Aug., 1967], No. 41082/68. Headings B2E and B2K. [Also in Divisions C3 and C4/5] Paper, paperboard and metals may be coated, e.g. by curtain coating, with melts of compositions comprising (1) 10 to 90 weight per cent of petroleum wax, (2) 5 to 45 weight per cent of a copolymer of 65 to 85 weight per cent of ethylene and 15 to 35 weignt per cent of a terminally unsaturated C 3-7 ester of a monocarboxylic acid and (3) 5 to 45 weight per cent of wood rosin acid or a glycerol or pentaerythritol ester thereof, said acid or ester providing at least one hydroxy group per ester group in the copolymer. The wax may be a paraffin, microcrystalline or mixed wax, and the copolymer may be derived from vinyl acetate, or methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl or isobutyl acrylate. Compositions for coating metals may also comprise 5 to 15 weight per cent of polyethylene. Examples describe the curtain coated of corrugated board with compositions comprising wax, pentaerythritol ester of rosin acids and (II) ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer and (V) ethylene/isobutyl acrylate copolymer.
