Abstract
1,181,071. Making forks. JAMES POTTS & SON Ltd. 25 Jan., 1968 [14 Feb., 1967], No. 6889/67. Heading B3A. A prong portion of a fork is made from a flat metal blank by forming an elongated aperture 20 or a longitudinally extending slit in the prong portion prior to the formation of the prongs. The blank is initially notched on its longitudinal edges to define a handle attachment portion (14), Fig. 1 (not shown), and a portion (18), Fig. 4 (not shown), in which the prong are formed. The portion (14) is tapered by rolling and bent to form a socket 16 for the handle. The portion (18) is tapered by rolling before or after the formation of the aperture or slit. The edge portions 21, 22 are then slitted to form the outer prongs 25, 26 and the connecting portion 19 removed if the blank has been apertured. The inner prongs 27, 28 are separated and simultaneously the outer prongs 25, 26 are bent perpendicularly to the inner prongs in a first forming operation. A second forming operation bends the outer prongs parallel to the inner prongs and the shaped blank is polished, abraded &c. The handle is attached to the prong portion by the socket or alternately by a pair of langets.
