1,180,330. Zone-melting. CONSORTIUM FUR ELEKTROCHEMISCHE INDUSTRIE G.m.b.H. 6 Sept., 1968 [9 Sept., 1967], No. 42530/68. Heading BIS. In the zone-melting of a rod 7 using a gas discharge 8 between a pair of cooled electrodes 2 and 3, a pressure of 50-1,000 mm of Hg, a voltage of 200-2,000 volts, and a frequency of 0.1-3 x 10<SP>3</SP> megacycles/sec is employed. Afterheating may be effected by a second pair of electrodes in parallel with the zone-melting electrodes (Fig. 2). Alternatively, a single pair of electrodes having curved ends (Fig. 4) may effect zone-melting and before-and-after heating. A number of gases and rod materials are specified.
