Abstract

118,023. Watson & Co., T. H., and Travis, W. Nov. 8, 1917. Furnace details.-Leakage from a hole in a roof or wall through which an electrode passes is prevented by a ring of loose segments pressed towards the electrode by a spring, by gravity, mechanically, or magnetically, and arranged with staggered, lapped, or tongue-and-groove joints. In one form, plates a, Figs. 1 and 3, rest on the machined face of a water-jacket b, and have radial slots a<2> receiving studs c secured in the jacket. 'On these plates rests a second series of plates d breaking joint with the first and having upward flanges d<1> in contact with the electrode and downward outer flanges d<2> resting on the water-jacket. Adjacent edges of these plates are cut away slightly for the passage of the studs c. A third series of plates, or a continuous ring f, is held loosely by the studs c so as to retain the lower rings when the electrode rises. A coil spring e, or an inelastic ring with short springs, surrounds the sets of plates. In another form, a sloping annular seating g, Fig. 5, supports outwardly-tapering segments h each having a lip overhanging the next segment. The weight of the plates is usually sufficient to maintain them in contact with the electrode, but may be assisted by the electro-magnetic action of the current in the electrode.
