Abstract
1,179,832. Recording changes in gas pressure. JOHNSON, MATTHEY & CO. Ltd. 24 Jan., 1967 [24 Jan., 1966], No. 3155/66. Heading B1X. [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for observing and recording the progress of a chemical reaction within a gas containing system and involving a change of mass of gas in the system, for use for example in determining the activity of a catalyst 15 in the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene 16, comprises reaction chamber 2, means for sensing a change of gas pressure in chamber 2 and for producing a signal responsive thereto, for example U-tube manometer 19 having lightsource photocell arrangement 37 to detect changes in liquid level in one of the arms of the U-tube, a displaceable reservoir vessel 12 for liquid communicating with the reaction chamber by means comprising conduit 11 means responsive to the signal for displacing the reservoir vessel to restore the pressure of gas in chamber 2 to its original value, and means for recording the displacement of the vessel with time. The reservoir may be displaced by means of a cord 24 passing over pulley 25 and secured to a drum 26 rotated by motor 27. The motor also drives pen 30 over chart 32, itself moved by rotating drum 33, to record the displacements of vessel 12.
