Abstract

1,179,307. Digital transmission systems. TELECOMMUNICATIONS RADIOELECTRIQUES ET TELEPHONIQUES. 23 Aug., 1967 [24 Aug., 1966], No. 38755/67. Heading H4P. Prior to transmission, binary data is converted to multi-level data in which one level is zero and in which there are 2p further levels, each level + q having a corresponding level - q of the same significance. The binary data is first converted to an intermediate signal having (p + 1) levels which is then converted to the (2p + 1) level signal. The latter conversion takes place according to one of three rules, depending on the required spectral characteristics: (a) successive elements in the same level in the (p + 1) level signal are converted to the corresponding level in the (2p + 1) level signal but have opposite signs; or (b) an element in the (p + 1) level signal is converted to the corresponding level in the (2p + 1) level signal and has a sign which is opposite to that of the sum of the levels of the (2p + 1) level signal since the conversion started if the level of the element is lower than the value of this sum; or (c) the value of the sum in (b) above is minimized, and if the sum becomes zero the sign of the next element in the (2p + 1) level signal is made opposite to that of the nearest preceding element having a level other than zero. Transmission may take place via two orthogonal carriers. At the receiver the multilevel signal is converted back to binary. The receiver may contain error-detecting circuitry which prevents errors becoming cumulative.
