Abstract
1,179,282. Electric vehicles; vehicle independent suspensions; frames; vehicle bodies. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 12 April, 1967, No. 16781/67. Headings B7B, B7D and B7H. A motor vehicle comprises front and rear seats, the floor 19 in front of the front seat being lower than the floor 21 in front of the rear seat and the front cushion being lower than the rear cushion, a fuel cell or battery mounted below the floor 21 in front of the rear seat and a motor for propelling and suspension linkage for controlling the rear wheels located below the rear seat cushion and to the rear of the battery or fuel cell. The frame 3 of the vehicle comprises a central backbone 5 with outriggers 7, 9, 13 and batteries or fuel cells are carried in trays 67 supported by flanges 11, 15 and 65 of the middle and rear outriggers and central backbone respectively. The trays 67 may be slid outwards from the vehicle when a door 69 is opened and the extension 71 of the door no longer closes the battery compartment. The semi-leading front wheel control arms 31 and the semi-trailing rear wheel control arms 33 are sprung by rubber torsion springs arranged coaxially of the pivot axes. Each rear spring (Fig. 4) comprises a rubber annulus 35 bonded between a sleeve 37 secured to a control arm 33 and a sleeve 39 secured between an outrigger 13 and the end of the backbone 5. Each rear wheel 34 is driven independently from an electric motor 41 or 43 through a gear pair 53, 55, a pot-type joint 59 within the gear 55, a drive shaft 61 and a universal joint 63. A ball bearing 63 is mounted between the two gears 55 and the two motors and gear pairs form a unit 44 bolted to the rear end of the backbone 5.
