Abstract

1,179,238. Semi-permeable membrane of cellulose acetate. COURTAULDS Ltd. 19 May, 1967 [20 May, 1966], No. 22524/66. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions B1 and C3] A semi-permeable membrane for desalination of water is prepared by forming a solution of cellulose acetate in aqueous acetic acid containing 5-25% of water by weight, casting as a film of uniform thickness and removing the acetic acid by immersing in water to effect coagulation of the film. Other water-soluble pore-forming agents may also be added e.g. polyvinyl alcohol or agents soluble in the aqueous acetic acid solvent e.g. methyl and hydroxyethyl cellulose. The cellulose acetate preferably has an acetyl content of 52-56À5% by weight. It is advantageous to separate the coating and coagulation steps by at least 5 minutes. The membranes of the example were heat-shrunk by immersion in hot water to yield more efficient membranes for desalination.
