Abstract
1,179,033. Fuel cells. ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO. 6 April, 1967 [31 May, 1966], No. 15944/67. Heading H1B. A fuel cell has a reforming zone separated from the electrolyte by an H 2 permeable membrane in the anode and containing a particulate catalyst which is (a) a nickel coated refractory containing 0À5-20 wt. per cent, based on Ni, of an alkali or alkaline earth metal oxide, hydroxide or carbonate or (b) an Ni-coated alkaline earth oxide. The oxide and/or carbonate may be formed in situ if the reforming zone is initially charged with an Ni-coated refractory containing a thermally unstable salt such as a nitrate, formate or acetate. In operating the fuel cell, hydrogen fuel is formed by reforming a hydrocarbon containing at least 2 carbon atoms with 2-5 moles steam/mole of carbon, at 250-550‹ C. and less than 10 atmospheres pressure.
