Abstract

1,178,967. Furnace linings. LOW MOOR ALLOY STEELWORKS Ltd. 26 July, 1967 [28 July, 1966], No. 33892/66. Heading F4B. A method of producing refractory articles, e.g. bricks, in which the raw materials together with fusible material are heated to fusion temperature in an electric arc furnace by first producing an arc between the electrodes of the furnace and broken pieces of electrode, or pieces of graphite or amorphous carbon within the furnace and then injecting an oxygen-rich mixture to support the combustion of the broken pieces of electrode as arcing continues. The melt is poured into preformed moulds which are subjected to controlled cooling. Alternatively the raw material may be placed directly into moulds for fusion and subsequent solidification. Sintering or glazing of refractory articles may be similarly effected. The method may also be employed to build up electric furnace bottoms in layers by partial fusion of the refractories, and to reline or repair furnace linings; new refractory material is spread where required and then fused in position in the oxygen-rich atmosphere.
