Abstract

Screwdrivers. - A screwdriver is provided with means for holding screws by gripping the sides of the slot in the screws, the gripping being effected by a rotatable member actuated by spring pressure. As shown, the screwdriver bit 1 is secured by a screwed ferrule 4 to a casing 3 to which the handle 15 is screwed. The gripping device consists of a rotatable rod 2 wedged at its outer end to correspond to the wedge of the bit 1 so that, in one angular position of the rod, the wedge end lies flush with the bit 1 and in another angular position the sides of the wedge end engage the sides of the screw slot as shown in Fig. 12. The rod 2 is turned into gripping position by a spring 9 acting against a nut 14 engaging a helical part 19 of the rod 2. The nut 14 is prevented from rotating by a cross pin 17 engaging slots 18 in the casing 3 and is secured by the pin 17 to a sleeve 21 by which the nut can be moved against the spring 9 to turn the rod 1 into non-gripping position, in which position the nut may be locked by means of a screw 23 and bayonet slot 22. In this position, the tool can be used as an ordinary screwdriver. A shoulder 8 on the rod 2 prevents endlong movement of the rod
