Abstract
1,178,707. Anti-light reflecting coating. GLAVERBEL. 25 Oct., 1966 [11 Jan., 1966], No. 47894/66. Heading B2K. [Also in Division G2] A transparent article comprises at least one piece of glass or other light transmitting material carrying a plural-layer anti-light reflecting coating one layer of which coating is a transparent dielectric coating layer with a refractive index higher than that of the material and is composed of two substances, one of which absorbs U.V. light and the other of which does not absorb U.V.. light but which influences the visible light and/or infra-red transmitting property of the article and has a refractive index which does not differ by. more than 0.5 from that of the U.V. absorbing substance. The U.V.-absorbing material may be a manganese, nickel, iron, cerium, vanadium, tungsten, tellurium, chromium, cobalt or cadmium oxide. The non-U.V.- absorbing substance may be titanium, thorium, aluminium, zirconium, antimony, indium, silicon, tin, or tantalum oxide. The dielectric coating layer can be formed by a deposition of the ingredients by say evaporation in vacuo or by applying solutions of substances which can be converted to the required ingredients in situ, e.g. by heating. By selecting the thicknesses of the layers, glazings which screen off U.V. light and also have anti-heat properties can be produced. The article may comprise a sheet of glass bearing a first coating layer of silicon dioxide and titanium oxide, a second coating layer comprising titanium oxide and an oxide which absorbs U.V. radiation and a third coating layer of silicon dioxide, the refractive indices of the first and third layers and the glass being related according to the equation, n external layer n glass=n<SP>2</SP> first layer where n in each case represents the refractive index of the glass or of the indicative layer. Articles such as single, double, or multiple glazing units may be produced. Such materials and articles can be used for protecting textiles from discolouration and fading or for protecting foodstuffs and pharmaceutical preparation from degradation, lenses of sun glasses. Glass containers may be treated.
