Abstract

1,178,632. Automatic attitude control. HUDSWELL YATES DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. March 6, 1968 [March 10, 1967], No. 11288/67. Heading G3R. [Also in Division A1] Mole plough apparatus comprises a tracked vehicle 8 which drags a mole plough element 24 through the ground, the element 24 being mounted in such a way as to pivot about longitudinal axis A, and control means mounted on the vehicle so as to be susceptible to movement of the element 24 about the axis A and operative to turn element 24 controllably about axis A to tend to maintain the element at a desired attitude. The element 24 is mounted at the distal end of outer frame 22 which is attached to inner frame 12 to pivot about axis C. The inner frame 12 is attached to platform 10 and pivots about axis A. Rotation of the inner frame is controlled by hydraulic ram 30 and any deviation of the element 24 from the vertical is detected by mercury switches 42, 44. This results in an electric signal being supplied to valve 40 which responds by producing either an up or down movement of rod 32 to correct the attitude of the element 24. The mercury switches can be replaced by pendulum controlled switches and proximity sensitive devices used instead of electrical contact. A further sensing device 62 for controlling movement of the element about axis C can be mounted on frame 22.
