The invention relates to an antibacterial antibiotic tenebrimycin complex, its components tenebrimycins, I, I<SP>1</SP>, II, III, IV, V and VI, mixtures thereof, and acid addition salts thereof. Tenebrimycin complex is produced by cultivating Streptomyces tenebrarius ATCC 17920 or ATCC 17921 or a tenebrimycin-producing mutant thereof, in a culture medium containing assimilable sources of carbon, nitrogen and inorganic salts under submerged aerobic conditions, preferably in the absence of visible light. Tenebrimycin is isolated from the clarified fermentation broth by adjusting to pH 5À5 and passing down a column of Amberlite IRC.50 (cation exchange resin) on the ammonium cycle. After elution with dilute acid, the eluate is concentrated and the pH adjusted to 11, poured into acetone, clarified and the sulphate precipitated by adding H 2 SO 4 to pH 3À5. The precipitate is dissolved in water and treated with an anion exchange resin to recover the tenebrimycin in the form of the base. The complex is fractionated by passing an aqueous solution of tenebrimycin sulphate down a column of Amberlite IRC 50 on the NH 4 cycle and eluting with 0À1 N, NH 4 OH and collecting fractions containing tenebrimycins I, I<SP>1</SP>, II, then III, then IV and finally V by eluting with 0À3 N, NH 4 OH. Further purification is obtained by first forming the helianthate of the component, decomposing the helianthate with aqueous H 2 SO 4 of pH 2À0, followed by treatment with (a) an anion-exchange resin on the OH- cycle and then (b) a retardation exchange resin.
