Abstract

1,178,440. Lighting control circuits. CENTURY LIGHTING Inc. 17 Feb., 1967, No. 7820/67. Heading H2H. The illumination intensity of an incandescent lighting load L is controlled by the arrangement shown in the Figure, in which the firing angle of silicon-controlled rectifiers 36, 36<SP>1</SP> (in series with the load L and inverse-parallel connected with respect to each other) is varied by a D.C. signal applied between terminals 12, 14. Each rectifier 36, 36<SP>1</SP> has a respective firing circuit 38, 38<SP>1</SP> comprising (only circuit 38 will be described) a relaxation oscillator in the form of a doublebased diode 52 and a capacitor 58, which is charged during alternate half-cycles of the supply 18, 20 through corresponding members 58<SP>1</SP>, 64<SP>1</SP> of the circuit 38<SP>1</SP> and through an impedance network 66 consisting of identical saturable reactors 68, 70 having load windings 72, 74 in series aiding relationship and control windings 76, 78 in series opposing relationship. The signal at terminals 12, 14 is applied to control windings 76, 78 to vary the impedance of reactors 68, 70 and hence the charging time of the capacitor 58 or 58<SP>1</SP>, which time determines the instant of firing of the corresponding rectifier 36 or 36<SP>1</SP> whose conduction causes its firing circuit to be disabled (shorted out) for the remainder of the half-cycle. A resistor 102 maintains the firing circuits 38, 38<SP>1</SP> energized when the main contactor 30 controlling load L is open, this contactor being opened or closed by signals applied to its coils 98, 100 from a terminal 16. The signals at terminals 12, 14, 16 may control a plurality of separate lighting loads and may, in the case of terminals 12, 14, be in the form of smooth or pulsating D.C.
