An apparatus for fermenting tea leaf and the like comprises a plenum chamber with a perforated top wall, a supply for air or other gas to the plenum chamber, and an endless perforated conveyer belt, one run of the belt passing along and closely above the top wall of the plenum chamber, means being provided for charging the leaf on to one end of said run and discharging it at the other end.
