Abstract

1,177,639. Dividing. ROTARY PROFILES ANSTALT. 10 Jan., 1967 [10 Jan., 1966; 5 April, 1986; 5 May, 19661, No. 58197/66. Heading B3W. A method of parting a ring from a tube comprising rolling a progressively deepening groove in the tube with profiling means which, as rolling proceeds, presents to the tube profiling portions of progressively increasing height and decreasing width. A machine for carrying out the method has a mandrel 20 which projects from each end of the tube and a roller carrying a number of annular inserts 28 which indent the tube, either cutting completely through the tube or leaving a thin easily broken web. The mandrel has a smooth cylindrical surface or, if the tube is sufficiently robust, has projecting collars 32 which indent the inside of the tube opposite the indentations produced by the tools 28. To accommodate the axial extension of the tube as it is indented the inserts diverge from their leading ends as shown in the developed view, Fig. 5. Cutting is completed in one revolution of the roller. The mandrel ends projecting from the tube are supported by one or two rollers, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown). The cross-sectional shape of the inserts is not uniform and changes from a round blunted crest to a sharp edge, Fig. 8 (not shown). In a modification the profiling formation is arranged as a constant pitch helix around a cylindrical body, the tube moving axially relative to the cylindrical body. The tube may be supported by a solid mandrel, or by a mandrel which has recesses cut into it to receive barrel-shaped rollers, only the rollers contacting the inside surface of the tube, Fig. 11 (not shown). In a further modification, the profiling formation consists of circular discs arranged in radially directed slots formed in the periphery of the wheel. Each disc is rotatably supported in its slot by a pin which is transverse to the axis of the wheel and is tangent to a pitch circle which is common to all the pins. The tube travels in a direction tangential to the wheel and is indented at successive positions by the discs which have double-chamfered edges.
