Abstract

1,177,516. Caprolactone. CHISSO CORP. 2 June, 1967 [2 June, 1966], No. 25545/67. Heading C2C. Derivatives of #-caprolactone, defined as linear and/or cyclic oligomeric esters and/or linear higher polyesters from the bifunctional esterification of #-hydroxycaproic acid and possibly containing caprolactone itself and/or hydroxycaproic acid, are freed from explosive peroxides by treatment with an aqueous acid solution containing at least 1 gm. ion of cuprous or ferrous ions for each mole of peroxide linkage. The treated product may be distilled to obtain caprolactone. The starting material is generally the products of oxidation of cyclohexanone or cyclohexanol with H 2 O 2 or O 2 , generally followed by an acid treatment KCl or NaCl may be added to increase the solubility of the cuprous or ferrous ions.
