Abstract

1,177,228. Electromagnetic forming. SIEMENS A.G. 7 April, 1967 [9 April, 1966], No. 16166/67. Heading B3Q. A field concentrator for electromagnetic forming comprises a plurality of axially-slit, truncated conical shells 12 insulated from one another, the concentrator fitting within a forming coil 11 with the ends of the shells projecting outside the coil for surrounding part of a workpiece 14 to be crimped to a member 15. The shells are made from copper alloy and/or aluminium alloy of tensile strength greater than 30 Kg/mm.<SP>2</SP> and apply the forming pressure uniformly or non-uniformly along the workpieces, depending upon whether the outside heights "h" of the shells or the inside heights are equal or unequal. Because of loss due to return of current along the inside of the inner shell, its external height is greater than the others. Such return may be discouraged by one or more axial slots in the projecting parts of the shells, the ends of the seats being close to the ends of the shell and the slots in adjacent shells being out of alignment. The shells are supported by parts 13 of hardened fabric. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 896,923 and 1,015,833.
