[Also in Division C3] An underlay flooring material is made by applying a foam-forming vinyl chloride homopolymer or copolymer containing composition onto a substrate embossed with a pattern of onto a substrate embossed with a pattern of projections and depressions with a depth of emboss from peak of projection to bottom of depression of at least 0.07 inches, and foaming the composition to provide a material having an overall thickness of more than 0.25 inches with a layer of foam bonded to the embossed substrate and bearing a pattern of projections and depressions derived from the embossed substrate. The embossed substrate may be a thin substrate embossed on both sides e.g. paper or a non-woven fabric. The foam forming composition may be a plastisol having a heat-activatable blowing agent incorporated therein and optionally a stabiliser kicker such as dibasic lead phthalate, organo-tin compounds, metal soaps together with epoxidised soya bean oil. The plastisol may also contain fillers e.g. calcium carbonate, silicate clays, talc, ground dolomite, and a viscosity depressant e.g. hexylene glycol and pigments e.g. iron oxide, copper phthalocyanine. Examples of blowing agents are given. The plastisol can be spread onto one side of the substrate by e.g. doctor knife spreading so that no substantial thickness of the foam forming composition is provided over the peaks of the embossed substrate.
