Abstract
1,176,284. Balanced pivotable sliding sash windows. H. J. HENDRA. 17 June, 1968, No. 28822/68. Heading E1J. In a double hung sliding balanced sash window wherein the sashes are balanced by torsion spring, nut and twisted bar mechanisms, these latter are incorporated as pivotable rails 15, 16 between the sash stiles and window frame jambs, the mechanism for the lower sash 14, (i.e. upper in the position shown) being pivoted at one end by a hook socket 19 on a pivot pin, the socket 19 having a retractable pin 22 to retain the hook 19 on pin, the other end of the mechanism being fixed to the lower end of the lower sash stile or the lower rail 14, whereas the mechanism for the upper sash 13 is pivoted at its lower end by a forked member on a pin 21 on the lower end of the associated jamb and at its upper end is fixed to the upper rail or upper end of the upper sash stile, so that the balance 15 has an upward pull on the lower sash 14 and the balance 16 exerts an upward thrust on the upper sash 13 when these sashes are in their fully open condition the guides 28 for the sliding sashes being shorter than the associated sides of the sashes, so that when in their completely open positions, Fig. 4, 5 the sashes are free from the guides and can be rotated about their pivot pins and can be unhooked, by withdrawing pin 22, from the frame, or alternatively when hinged together at their meeting rails, as at 23, they present the greatest ventilating area of the open window and the balance mechanism allows the then lower sash 13 to rest on the sill 12, for window cleaning in the interior of the building and if necessary to remove, screens or storm windows 27, held in grooves 32 in the jambs 11. When the sash 14 is fully raised to its open position, pins 26 thereon engage in recesses in the bottom of sockets 19 to prevent the balances 15 from unwinding when withdrawn with the sash 14 from the window frame.
