[Also in Divisions A2 and H5] A device for sterilizing materials by microwave energy comprises a cavity 6 into which microwave energy is injected, having short, tunnel-like entry and exit regions 12 which each contain a closure barrier formed by a series of dependent, displaceable chains 18 which reach to the surface of the conveyor 2 and serve to prevent or limit the escape of microwave energy. Preferably, the chains are of such a length as to be resonant with the microwave frequencies employed. The chains may be replaced by pivoted,. rigid rods or wires.
