Abstract

1,176,057. Shelving. KNOLL ASSOCIATES Inc. 5 July, 1967 [6 July, 1966; 28 June, 1967], No. 31076/67. Heading A4B. A book shelf whose shelves 10a are adjustable vertically by connecting grooves 10b along each end of each shelf with apertures 12a in the vertical end support carries a display shelf 35 pivotable between a horizontal position within the shelf near the top of the space between two shelves and a vertical or nearly vertical position across the front, hiding the bookspace from view. The mounting plate 20, screwed to each vertical end support carries threaded pivot 30 which holds a bracket 37 carrying the display shelf 35, a stop pin 32 projects from the mounting plate through arcuate slot 37c which circles round pivot pin 30 at the centre of the arc, and the pin 32 abutting against the ends of slot 37c limits the pivotal movement of the display shelf. To hold in position magazines N on the display shelf, a cover 50 extends across shelf 35 or (Fig. 5) across part of its surface 50a<SP>1</SP>. The cover is attached to the top 35a of the shelf by hinge 50d so that the cover may be lifted to remove the displayed magazines, and slot 50f slidably secured to hinge wing 50e by pins 55 allows the cover to move out from shelf 35, to accommodate a plurality of magazines N. The narrower cover 50a<SP>1</SP> slides laterally along the shelf, slider 35w, attached to the cover 50a<SP>1</SP>, sliding along channel 35x in the top end 35a<SP>1</SP> of the display shelf. The lower shelf end 35b carries a magazine support in the form of channel-shaped member 44. If the position of pin 32 allows the display shelf to completely reach the vertical position, a spring 50p in the hinge 50d<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 4) holds the cover against the magazines, and a locking bar (60 in Fig. 7, not shown) of Z-shaped cross-section fitting between the end of the cover, and the channel 44, holds the cover locked to the shelf while the vertical end supports cover the end of the bar thus preventing lateral sliding to remove the bar.
