Abstract

1,175,967. Photo-electric turbidometers. MARCHON PRODUCTS Ltd. Oct. 9, 1967 [Oct. 14, 1966], No.9187/68. Divided out of 1,175, 966. Heading G1A. The sulphate ion concentration of a solution is determined by passing the solution, free from suspended solids, together with a solution containing barium ions into a mixing chamber designed to inhibit the adherence of barium sulphate, passing the mixed solutions to a turbidimetric cell, illuminating the mixture in the turbidimetric cell and measuring the ratio of the amount of light transmitted through the mixture to the amount of light scattered therefrom. A metered quantity of a sample extracted from a wet process phosphoric acid reactor by the method disclosed in Specification 1,175, 966 is diluted with a measured quantity of water and mixed with a measured quantity of barium chloride in a mixing chamber. The mixing chamber is made of P. T. F. E. or provided with ultrasonic vibration to prevent adherence of barium sulphate. The amount of barium sulphate precipitated is measured in a turbidometer in which light is alternately passed along paths at 90 degrees to one another and a photo-cell measures the ratio of the transmitted to scattered light. The light beams may be derived from a common source and may be modulated by a rotating chopper.
