Abstract

1,175,405. Modulators. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS-G.m.b.H. 18 April, 1967 [25 May, 1966], No. 17723/67. Heading H3R. [Also in Division G1] A modulator for producing a calibrated modulated output with a modulation index of less than 0À1 comprises a coupling device K1 for diverting some of the energy from the carrier source 1 along a branch path comprising one or more attenuators 31 and 32, a modulator 2, and a phase shift device 4, the branch path being coupled back to the main path through a second coupling device K2. In Fig. 3 the main path is coupled through the device K2 to a quadratic detector 7 which receives the output of the branch line as a second input and produces a deflection on the meter 8 proportional to the difference vector of the two inputs. If the loss in the coupling device K2 is known, e.g. 15db, the damping members 32 and phase shift device 4 can be adjusted to give a zero reading on the meter 8, when the sideband level at the output device 6 will be 30db below the carrier. If the maximum level required is 50db the calibrated attenuator 31 is adjusted to 0À915db, the reading of meter 8 is noted, the attenuator 31 is returned to zero, and the modulator 2 is adjusted to give the same reading of meter 8. Any further lowering of the sideband level is now effected by the attenuator 31. In a modified system, Fig. 1 (not shown), units 7, 8 and 32 are omitted and the modulation index is varied by adjustment of the modulator 2 and/or the attenuator 31. The modulator may be an amplitude or a frequency modulator, and the output. is amplitude or frequency modulated according to the setting of the phase shift device 4. The apparatus may be used for calibrating noise measuring devices. If the noise of a microwave oscillator is to be measured it may be connected as the carrier source 1 and the output device 6 is a noise measuring device which is used to determine the change in attenuation in the branch path required to double the noise of the oscillator.
