Abstract
1,175,388. Controlling reactors. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY. 11 Dec., 1967 [16 Dec., 1966], No. 56152/67. Heading G6C. Apparatus for introducing and removing a booster rod or a safety rod into and from a nuclear reactor comprises screw means for introducing and removing the rod slowly, means for disconnecting the screw means and the rod to permit movement of the rod independently of the screw means, and an energy accumulator in which energy derived from movement of the rod in one direction by the screw means is stored and on disconnection of the screw means drives the rod rapidly in the other direction. More specifically, the apparatus comprises a first mechanism for introducing and removing the rod 18 slowly including a hollow drive screw 1 which encircles the rod 18 (a booster rod in the embodiment described) and is normally secured to it by a disconnectible coupling (Fig. 4, not shown). In the event of an alarm signal disconnecting the coupling, the rod 18 can slide axially on longitudinal anti-friction bearings, such as bearings 22, within the screw 1. The screw 1 is so mounted, by way of longitudinal anti-friction bearings and rollers (not shown) in a sleeve which extends through a biological shield and a heat shield as to be rotatable therewith and be movable axially relative thereto. The axial movement is produced by a helical anti-friction bearing 6 rotated by a reducing drive system 16 via a coupling 15. The apparatus also comprises a second mechanism for fast emergency removal of the booster rod 18 comprising two axially movable cylinders 31 which are secured to the rod 18 by arms 28 and which each encircle a stationary hollow piston 39 connected to an oleopneumatic accumulator 40 which stores energy during the introduction of the rod 18 produced by the first mechanism. The accumulators 40 provide rapid removal of the rod in an emergency. The apparatus may also be used with a safety rod, in which event the direction of the accumulators is reversed to provide rapid introduction of the rod in an emergency. A damping mechanism is provided in the form of two elastomeric hydrostatic compression dampers (not shown) to absorb the remaining energy of the moving system at the end of its fast travel. The rod 18, which has an inactive extension, may be provided with a hairpin cooling circuit in the active part.
