Abstract

1,175,374. Electro-phoretic imaging processes. XEROX CORP. Nov. 24, 1966 [Nov. 30, 1965], No. 52610/66. Heading G2H. A method of electro-phoretically imaging comprises the steps of providing a dry layer of electrically photo-sensitive particles, applying an insulating carrier layer to the layer, applying an electric field between two electrodes one of which is transparent, and imagewise exposing the layer to activating radiation to form an image. In one embodiment, a transparent injecting electrode 1, e.g., of glass coated with a thin layer 3 of tin oxide carries a sheet 4 comprising a conductive substrate 5 and a dry layer of photosensitive particles in a wax binder soluble in the carrier liquid. A blocking electrode 7 having a conductive core 13 is covered with an insulating layer such as Baryta paper. A nozzle 15 supplies insulating carrier liquid to form a suspension of pigment particles which is then imagewise exposed to a transparency simultaneously with the application of an electric field. Pigment particles migrate to the electrode 7 leaving behind a visible image of transparency 11 on substrate 5. The carrier liquid is evaporated off, such that the wax binder fixes the image to the substrate. Additionally, a lacquer coating or a transparent sheet may be applied to the image. The sheet 4 may be applied to the electrode 7 instead of electrode 1. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown) a capsule (17) contains the insulating carrier liquid. The capsule ruptures on contact with electrode (7) which then spreads the carrier liquid across the pigment area. Examples of suitable carrier liquids are Sohio Odourless Solvent 3440, Isopar G (Registered Trade Mark) decane, dodecane, N-tetradecane, silicone oils, petroleum ethers, paraffin oils and mixtures thereof. Examples of pigments include (Example 1) a tri-mix comprising equal amounts of a cyan pigment, Vulcan Fast Red BBE toner and Indofast Yellow toner dispersed in Sohio Odourless Solvent before application to substrate 5 for producing a multi-colour image.
