Abstract

117,532. Igranic Electric Co., (Cutler. Hammer Manufacturing Co.). Sept. 18, 1917. Resistances.-In a liquid rheostat, stationary semi-pyramidal electrodes are arranged in a circle so that adjacent conductive faces are parallel in horizontal section. Successive rises of the electrolyte produce increasing additions to the active surfaces. Movable electrodes also may be provided, and there may be arrangements for circulating the electrolyte. In the construction shown, each upper electrode 1 forms two sides of an in. verted pyramid, with only its edges presented to wards the tank 3, and is supported by lugs 11 attached to insulated conductors 10 passing through a cover 6. Correspondingly shaped lower electrodes 2 are carried by a spider 13 sliding on a vertical rod 14 and linked to a counterweighted lever 17. The inner tank 3, supported by a flange in an outer tank 4, has a bottom opening controlled by a valve 21 and surrounded by a weir 20, the edge of which is a little above the points of the upper electrodes, to prevent complete opening of the circuit.. Electrolyte is pumped from the outer tank through a pipe 24, and enters the inner tank through a perforated pipe 26 surrounding the weir 20 and covered by a diffusion screen 27 to cause even distribution. When the inner tank is filled, the liquid escapes over its upper edge to the outer tank. For polyphase current, each pair of opposite upper electrodes is connected to one phase conductor by means of a bar 12. The lower electrodes then constitute the neutral point of the resistance and are grounded through their support.
