In apparatus for measuring the water content of material such as foundry sands and coke sintering mixtures, the material is fed in measured quantities by a doser 7 into a rotating drying furnace 6, and subsequently, after drying falls through discharge vessels 4 into an outlet 11. The steam from the material is freed of dust by filter 3, and condensed at 2, the water thus obtained flowing into an automatic self emptying measuring vessel 9, and the air being pumped away by vacuum pumps. The water flows out through tube 22 into container 13, the rate of emptying vessel 9 and thus the flow of liquid being measured electrically by means incorporating a photo-cell 8, light source 10 and recording device 15.
