Abstract

1,175,086. Making heat exchangers; soldering. STOLLE CORP. 24 Jan., 1967 [28 Jan., 1966], No. 3479/67. Headings B3A and B3R. In soldering or brazing an elongated metal member to a flat sheet of metal the member is positioned on the sheet in contact with solder or brazing material of lower melting point than the sheet or member, the sheet is clamped over substantially the entire area not occupied by the member, the assembly is heated to melt the metal of lower melting point and is then cooled. A jig for use in such a method comprises a flat metal plate and a block of non-metallic material of the same length and width as the plate secured to the underside of plate, the block having a recess on its underside with a resilient pad secured in the recess. In securing a sinuous copper tube to a flat aluminium sheet to produce a radiant heating-cooling panel three stations namely, assembly, heating and cooling are provided. At each station a support block 10 of annealed steel is arranged and over these blocks a perforated aluminium belt 13 is arranged to pass. The aluminium sheet 16 is placed on the belt at the first station, ribbon or wire 22 solder or brazing material and flux is disposed on the sheet and the sinuous tubing 15 is laid on the sheet upon the ribbon or adjacent the wire. The solder may be of 91% tin and 9% zinc. A jig 14b is placed over the assembly, the jig comprising a cast aluminium plate 17 to which is screwed a block 19 of asbestos fibre and inorganic binder, the underside of the block having a groove 20 to receive the tubing with a strip 21 of silicone rubber in the groove to press on the tubing. The belt 13 is moved to the heating station where the support block of annealed steel is heated to 510‹ F. to melt the solder and a weight is placed on the jig. After three minutes the belt is moved to the cooling station where the annealed steel support block is heated to 300‹ F. so that the solder soldifies in two minutes. Stiffening elements of the same or different metal may similarly be secured to a flat sheet.
