Abstract

1,175,064. Consolidated sheets; laminates; films. FORMICA CORP. 21 Nov., 1966, No. 52086/66. Headings B5A, B5B and B5N. [Also in Division B2] Consolidated, dense, plastics sheets are produced continuously by introducing finelydivided non-sintered thermoplastic polymeric material into the nip between a pair of flexible, continuous metal belts, heating it to at least its softening temperature in a first, heating, zone between the belts, continuously moving the heated material to a second, densifying zone between the belts, the spacing between the belts in the densifying zone causing greater compression than in the heating zone to conlidate the material into a sheet-like mass, cooling it below its softening temperature while continuously removing the material from the densifying zone, and cooling it to room temperature. The process is suitable for use with " intractable " materials, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, poly-(methylmethacrylate), a polyimide or a polyacrylonitrile, or heatdegradable materials, e.g. light-stabilized polyvinyl chloride. Other materials are also specified. Reinforcements, e.g. paper webs, fabrics of natural, synthetic or glass fibres, asbestos fibres or metal foils, may be incorporated by being introduced between the belts. The polymeric material may be applied to one or both sides of the sheet of reinforcing material or between two such sheets. In Example 10, eight sheets of glass fabric, impregnated with a solution of a polyimide are laminated together between the belts.
