Abstract

1,174,859. Chemical furnaces. BRITISH TITAN PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 7 June, 1968 [21 July, 1967], No. 33533/67. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C1] A furnace for the reaction of a silicon halide with an organic compound in the vapour phase consists of a carbon tube 1 mounted within a graphite cylinder 2 which provides a support for carbon fibres 3 which form an insulation and are surrounded by water jacket 4. The ends 5 of said tube are partially enclosed by water-cooled electrical connections 6 which are connected via discs 7 to the supply leads 8, 9 so that the current flows through the tube thereby generating heat. The furnace is provided with a quartz window 11 to enable the furnace temperature to be measured with an optical pyrometer. The upper end of the tube is provided with an injector 13 through which the gaseous reactants are introduced and an aluminium helical coil 14 to induce laminar flow in the gas. An entry port 15 is provided through which an inert gas may be admitted to provide a sheath for the internal wall of tube 1. The furnace produces pigmentary silicon carbide by reacting the silicon halide e.g. silicon monohydrogen trichloride or a silicon tetrahalide with aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, aldehydes or alkyl halides. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 899,947 and 946,828.
