Abstract

1,174,807. Tyre building drums. ERSTE MASCHINENFABRIK KARL-MARX-STADT VEB. 10 March, 1967, No. 11325/67. Heading B7C. A tyre building and shaping drum has a building surface formed by overlapping flexible plates 14 connected with segments 10 radially movable on axially displaceable end plates 8, 9 which may be locked in an extreme adjacent position by engagement of pawls 22 with catches 24. In use, the segments 10 are moved radially outwardly by toggle pairs 12 on rotation of a screw shaft 3 so as to move sleeves 4, 5 threaded thereon away from one another until link discs 6, 7 are locked to end plates 8, 9 by engagement of the pawls 22 with the axially inner corners of sleeves 4, 5. The shaft 3 is rotated in the opposite Direction to advance the end plates towards one another, thereby bowing out the plates 14, until the pawls 22 lock with spring-loaded catches 24 pivoted on axiallydisplaceable discs 28, 29. Belts 26 on the catches 24 then disengage the pawls from the sleeves 4, 5, thereby allowing the segments 10 to contract, and further axial advancement causes abutment of cams 25 with sleeves 4, 5 to disengage the catches 24 from pawls 22. Reverse rotation of the shaft 3 then returns the components to their initial disposition. Adjustable spindles 19 and set-screws 20 respectively determine the maximum and minimum relative spacing of adjacent plates 8, 9 and discs 6, 7. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), the pawls 22 are mounted on the discs 6, 7 and lock the latter with the end plates by coaction with catches (31) on the end plates.
