Abstract

1,174,781. Optically measuring relative displacement. ASSOCIATED ENG. Ltd. Jan. 20, 1967 [Jan. 20, 1966], No.2689/66. Headings G1A and G1M. [Also in Division G2] A positioning system comprises two members each carrying a pattern of concentric ring markings on a transparent support such that one pattern may be viewed through the other, the relative displacement of the members being determined by reference to the MoirÚ fringe pattern set up between the two ring markings. The markings may consist of Fresnel rings, or the radii of successive rings may increase as the square roots of their integers. The centre spot or zone may in each pattern consist of a further set of smaller concentric rings for fire adjustments. The system may be used to position machine tool components, or negatives used in colour printing, and the fringe patterns may control electronic positioning devices.
